I recently had the pleasure of photographing and hanging out with a cool bay area hip hop artist Kero One at the "Direction in Sound" concert in San Francisco. Kero One's soulful and upbeat sound reached globally and has devoted followings in both Japan and South Korea. Last year, Kero One opened up for the very popular (And my favorite) Korean hip hop group Epik High on their "Map the Soul" world wide tour, which I regretfully missed. As a result of their creative collaboration, both groups were able to put together some pretty tight tracks that feature their amazing musical talents as well as their voices. Having seen and heard Kero One's awesome live performance, I've now become one of his huge number of fans. My Shogun Warrior toy was Mazinga (Mazinger-Z) with shooting fist and tons of rockets that I could launch from his hand. I used to play for hours, having some spectacular battles in my friend's backyard with his collection of Shogun Warriors. Just to be fair, we took turns losing the fights. Great memories.

Being a huge Star Wars fan and having loved my Mazinga Shogun Warrior when I was a little dude, I got extremely excited when I heard about the Super Shogun Stormtrooper last summer. Toy design company Super 7 which also has a store in San Francisco created this Star Wars and Japanese toy mash-up for all you collectors and geeks.

Super 7 is accepting pre-orders now and they will take care of shipping charge. This cool collector's toy is selling for $299 and is limited to 2,000 worldwide. Every several years or so, a groundbreaking film is introduced to audiences that will both transform cinema and set higher standards in moviemaking. In my opinion, Avatar is this new groundbreaking film deserving lots of kudos for accomplishments in motion capture CGI effects and new 3D technology. If Avatar continues to do well in the box office, I believe theater owners will finally realize that digital projection screens capable of showing 3D is unquestionably the future of movies.

The moon world of Pandora is an exotically beautiful place where plenty of danger lurks for those who are unfamiliar with its eco-system. Yet for Na’vi, the indigenous population of Pandora, this hostile environment is a natural paradise where they are spiritually and physically connected to all living things. With the help of 3D, I was able to immerse myself in James Cameron’s fantastic universe. I was just as curious as Jake when he first began exploring the lushly colorful forest floor in his Avatar. My own inquisitiveness was satisfied when Jake began prodding at wondrously bizarre plant life and seeing some interesting results. As Jake and Neytiri took to the skies on the Banshees, I shared their exhilaration of flight among the floating mountains. The thundering explosions on the ground caused by insinerary rounds from Samson flying vehicles made me want to duck for cover. This awesome movie experience is definitely worth my twelve bucks.

The combination of gorgeously rendered CGI effects, amazing sound and 3D worked harmoniously to bring Avatar to life. As you can tell, I really enjoyed this film. Once the movie ended, I wanted to revisit Pandora all over again. I don’t think I felt this way about a film since my first Star Wars experience.

On my list of favorite modern age comic artists is Mike Mignola, the creator, artist and writer of Hellboy published by Dark Horse Comics. This comic book series continues to attract fans today not only for Mignola’s distinctively styled art, but also for the well-written folklore and mystical storylines that captivates the readers. Popularity for the red demon hero went mainstream after the two successful Hellboy films hit theaters. There is rumor that a third film is in the early stages of conceptualization. Although now artist Duncan Fegredo is doing the art for the interiors, Mignola still writes and renders the covers for Hellboy comic books.

Mezco Toys, which I never heard of until I bought the figure, produced a series of 7” Hellboy characters in 2005. I actually picked up this Hellboy figure in Tower Records when it was still around. For an action figure, it has very detailed sculpt that is accurate to Mignola’s character. Oh, it’s heavy too…real solid. Although it’s not in any of the pictures, the figure also came with a horseshoe that you can hang on his belt.

At the World's Largest Fish Market in Tsukiji, Tokyo

My hotel alarm clock buzzed loudly right at 4:00 am and man, it was tough getting out of bed. Went to sleep pretty late after having a delicious Shabu Shabu dinner with artist Tsuneo Sanda and his wife, so it was even harder to get up this early in the morning. I needed to get my butt out of bed quickly or else I would miss the Tsukiji Maguro (Tuna) auctions, which started at 5:00 am. Without washing up, I put on my clothes and got my camera gear ready in just under fifteen minutes. I rushed down to the hotel lobby and hailed for a taxi, since the trains don't run this early. From Shinagawa, it took about twenty minutes and ¥3,000 yen ($35.00...Ouch) to get to the entrance of the fish market. This place was huge...got lost right away. As I ran through the market where the vendors were setting up, all of my senses came alive with the incredible display of fish everywhere and people hurriedly moving about on their highly maneuverable motorized carts, carrying fish of course.

After getting some confusing directions from security guards and fish stand owners, I made it to the Maguro auction just when it opened their doors to the public. I was breathless by the time I got there, but excited from the energy of this place. The sight of huge frozen solid Tunas lined up neatly in rows was eerily amazing. It was preview time and many buyers wearing rubber boots, carrying a pick and flashlight were inside the chilly warehouse to inspect the tunas. They went from tuna to another tuna, poking, picking, touching and even tasting the meat from the tail end of each fish to check for quality. After thoroughly examining the tunas, buyers carefully scribbled down the assessments of their favorite fish on notebooks.

The cowbells rang and the auctions began. A man stood up on top of a wooden stool and began shouting without a microphone. What I heard next sounded like a tribal chant, a melodic tune actually pleasing to the ear, created by auctioneers and buyers hollering to place their bids. As one auction ended, another began. This continued until all of the tunas were sold.

Once I left the auction, I took my time touring the fish market, trying to enjoy and take in the sights, sound and smell of the amazing surroundings. I got to see where many of the sold tunas went. They were brought to vendors located throughout the market that saw them up in various pieces. After having my fill of the market activities, I started looking for a place to eat. My stomach was growling and after seeing all the fish, I was ready for some fresh maguro. Being in Tsukiji, finding a good place to eat fresh fish wasn’t difficult. Not far from the market, I stumbled onto a small restaurant with a long line of locals waiting at the door to eat. This was the place for me. I ordered Chirashi-don (Raw fish over rice) with Toro (Fatty tuna), Uni (Sea Urchin) and Ikura (Salmon roe)…so good! This was an awesome way to end my visit to the Tsukiji fish market.

Hayao Miyazaki's Wondrous Ghibli Museum

Did you know there is a museum dedicated to Hayao Miyazaki's animated films in Tokyo? Mitaka, a western suburb of Tokyo is home to Ghibli Museum. This fantastic place opened its doors back in 2001 and has become a popular tourist destination for both the Japanese and foreign visitors. Although the museum is geared toward children, I guarantee the grown-ups will enjoy the playful displays just as much as the kids. Once you step inside, you will loose yourself in Miyazaki's world and forget you're an adult. One of the treats you'll receive for the visit is viewing one of five exclusive short animation features that runs for about 20 minutes inside their Saturn Theater. "Water Spider Monmon" short was playing during my visit.

I wish I could've taken more photos, but the museum has a strict rule about taking pictures inside the building. You can take photos outside the museum and also on the roof where the giant robot from "Castle in the Sky" watches over the garden. Straw Hat Cafe is on the second level and they serve some incredibly delicious deserts. If you want to take some souvenirs back with you, goto the third floor where the gift shop is located. Trust me...you're going to walk away with a Totoro stuffed doll like I did :)

Here's directions. First, get to the Shinjuku station. From there, you'll need to take the Chuo line (Rapid Service) to Mitaka. Once you get to the Mitaka station, go out the South exit, turn left and walk down to the ground level. You can either take a bus at the stop located right at the ground level or walk along the Tamagawa Josui (Waterworks) to the museum. Walk all the way down until you see a major street, make a right and walk about 300 meters on the park side, then you'll see a small gate to the museum. It's about a twenty minute walk.

Toys Galore in Nakano, Tokyo!

Now Akihabara is famous for electronic goods and of course Toys, but not many people know about Nakano. If you're looking for the illusive vintage toys, Nakano is the right place. There are four levels jam packed with individual toy stores inside a shopping center called Nakano Broadway. The largest toy shop in the building is Mandarake...actually it's misleading to label this place just as a toy shop. Mandarake not only has toys, but they got books, manga, models, anime and even original anime artworks.

To get to Nakano, you need to first get to the Shinjuku station. From there, take the JR Chuo line to Nakano. There are two types of services on the Chuo line; the local and rapid services. Local has three stops and rapid has one to get to Nakano. Once you get to the Nakano station, go out the North exit. Walk straight out and then into a building with glass ceilings. There are tons of shops and restaurants in this building, but you're not there yet. Keep walking until you see the Nakano Broadway. Once you enter Broadway, you'll see escalators to the top levels. Start with level 3 first since this is where all the major toys shops are located. When you're done, start hitting the rest of the levels.

The Search for Godzilla in Tokyo!

Greetings from Tokyo! Flew in last night to one my favorite cities in the world and I'm already having a blast. One of the things I didn't get to do during the previous visits to Tokyo was making a trek to see Godzilla, known as "Gojira" in Japan. I'm not talking about the movies or a vinyl figure in a toy shop somewhere in Akihabara. What I'm referring to is a four foot tall (Not including the base) recreation of the world famous monster made of bronze...a work of art by Tomoki Kobayashi, who I believe is an anime director. In commemoration of Godzilla's demise in the 1995 film "Godzilla vs Destroyer", the statue was erected in Yurakucho that same year.

I prepared myself with loads of information about Godzilla's location prior to my trip. Well...I still got lost and it took some asking for directions with my preschool level Japanese language skills to get me to the right spot. If you're a fan of the giant lizard, this is a must see when you visit Tokyo.

Now here's my directions:

Get off on JR Yurakucho station and go out the Tokyo International Forum exit. Make an immediate left and walk along the side of the overhead tracks where small mom & pop shops and restaurants are lined up underneath. You're on the right path if you see "Bic Camera" building on the other side of the street. You're going to walk about three blocks and will come to a very large street (Harumi-Dori) where in the corner you'll see "Hibiya" underground train station entrance. Turn right on to this street, but on the opposite side of the train station entrance. Walk one block and take a left on to Yurakucho street. Walk little over a block and the statue is located to your left in a small plaza between the parking entrance to Hibiya Chanter building and Navire Hibiya building (First Kitchen fast food chain on the first floor). Cool Stuff on My Desk: Kotobukiya 1/7 Scale Clone Trooper (Episode II)

While I was dusting off my desk, which I don't do enough of; a tiny bulb in my head clicked on and I thought, "Hey, why not take pictures of all the cool stuff I have displayed on my desk and show them off!" I’ve already posted some pictures of my favorite toys and statues on my blog in the past, so why not have a series called, “Cool Stuff on My Desk!” I know this sounds like one of my, “Dude, where’s my car” moments, but I promise that I’ll make this series of posts interesting by featuring hopefully some neat photos.

Now, let’s talk about my first featured cool piece. Although I’m more of a Star Wars classic trilogy kinda guy, I was pleased with all the awesome hardware and baddies of the Star Wars prequels. One of prequel characters I totally dig is the Clone Troopers. When Kotobukiya 1/7 scale Clone Trooper first surfaced after Attack of the Clones had hit theaters, I was totally blown away by the cool sculpt. I actually couldn’t wait for it to show up months and months later in the States, so I made an order straight from Japan. It cost me some pennies, but I was extremely happy with it when I put it all together and displayed on my desk. Well, this sucker is still on my desk with plenty of dust on it, but still looking pretty cool.

Fantastic Art of Kazuki Takamatsu

At first glance, an observer will assume right away that the above images were rendered using a computer and are CGI models or depth mattes. Well, these artworks are in fact gouache paintings by Japanese artist Tazuki Takamatsu. I'm thinking the artist gets a kick out of fooling everyone. Takamatsu's sexy monotone anime inspired figures juxtaposed alongside high tech gear, weapons and surreal backgrounds are just hauntingly beautiful. These paintings would look awesome on my wall!

Park Hyo-shin's "After Love" 13 Minute Music Video starring Park Si-Yeon & Park Yong-ha

This 13 minute long music video or rather more like a short film got a lot of attention in Korea due to the $2.5 million U.S. dollar production budget. Starring two big name actors and a singer all with the last name Park (No relations), the video is entertaining even with a typical K-drama storyline. I think I enjoyed the video more because of Park Si-yeon who is incredibly hot! Park Si-yeon and another actor in this video Park Yong-ha were both in an excellent K-drama called, "The Slingshot." It's been a while since I've seen a good K-drama and The Slingshot was really GOOD. I'll write little something about this drama later, but right now check out these videos.

The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Wars

I know I'm little late with this post about a book featuring some amazing pre-production artworks from a cool little television show called The Clone Wars ^__^ When The Clone Wars feature film was released in the theaters, there were a lot of unhappy fans out there complaining endlessly about this animated addition to the Star Wars Universe. I remember hearing, "The animation looks too wooden, new character Ahsoka is too immature...yada yada yada." Well, I can tell you now that many of the same dissatisfied fans tuned in every Friday night to catch the latest episodes and are eagerly awaiting for season two to start broadcasting this October. From the beginning, I saw a great potential of the series. This was the perfect chance to expand on the characters and story line of the crucial time in Star Wars history. The many battles and struggles of the Clone Wars were not fully explored in the films and the people at Lucasfilm Animation are now able to tell this story.

Perhaps I’m bias since I know the talented guys at the design department, but this book is one of my favorite “Art of” books. The design crew works incredibly hard to come up with some amazing stuff for the series and what you see in the book is just a small fraction of what these folks created in their darkened offices at the Big Rock Ranch. The book features designs from the The Clone Wars movie to the end of season one. Hmm…I wonder if there will be art books for each season. That would be cool.

bengraphics over at Youtube described this video as "A "5th-grader-friendly" collection of clips and making-of footage from notable visual effects films of the past century. Originally intended for educational use as an introduction to a classroom lecture." I thought it was put together very nicely although I felt films such as Lord of the Rings trilogy and Matrix with their groundbreaking special effects were left out. Still, it's a great video showing some wonderful examples of how special effects in movies has advanced through the years.

I unfortunately wasn't able to catch the free IMAX preview of Avatar on Friday, but watching the first trailer already got me sold on this fantastical sci-fi adventure. Yes, the CGI effects is not groundbreaking as Cameron first claimed, but it is most definitely solid in quality. Since I haven't seen the entire film yet, I'm going to keep my mind open and try not to come to any conclusion. From seeing the trailer, I can tell Avatar will be a visual feast with great story. I can't wait to see it this December!

The boy hero of Disney/Pixar's new animation "Up," which raked US$68 million in the first week since its U.S. release, is modeled after a Korean employee in the Pixar Studios. The little boy Russell is modeled after Peter Sohn, a 32-year-old ethnic Korean production artist who has been working with Pixar since 2000.

Sohn also made his debut as a short film director with four-minute animation "Partly Cloudy," which was released along with "Up."

At the premiere of "Up" at the Pixar Studio in California recently, Sohn said, "The atmosphere here at work is like playing. We draw each other's faces in meetings, and Russell's face was actually my face that someone had drawn. We decided to make the main character of the new film Asian, and naturally I became the model," Sohn said.

"Up" is a story of the big adventure of an old man and a school kid. It was the opening film of the Cannes Film Festival last month, and will be released in Korea at the end of July.

Modeling for a huge animation hit is not as big a deal to this graduate of California Institute of Arts as making his directorial debut. Sohn wanted to be an animation director since early childhood. "My parents ran a grocery store when I was young, and my mother would take me to the cinema every Fridays. She wasn't fluent in English, so she would always ask me, 'What are they saying?' But she had no problem understanding Disney animations. It was then that I decided to make animation films when I grew up."

Sohn was also a story artist on "Finding Nemo" and the voice of Emile in "Ratatouille."

South Korean Leading Men Invades Hollywood

Riding on a huge Korean pop culture wave, major talents from the land of the morning calm have begun to reach Hollywood where already some Chinese and Japanese imported actors have managed to become successful. The only gripe I have is that the market for Asian actors in Hollywood are mostly in the action genre. No Asian male actor has gotten a lead in a romantic drama or serious academy worthy role yet. I guess though it's a step up from taking on roles as super nerds with exaggerated accents which perpetuates a unmanly and brainy stereotypes for Asian men.

Normally, Asian actresses from the Far East are aggressively imported for supporting roles since they usually are eye candy for the American male audience, but interestingly leading men are making an introduction to Hollywood in the case of the Korean wave. Well, it's about time the Koreans made it to our shores...hope they are accepted well by the audiences here.

Ninja Assassin Behind the Scenes...sorry it's in German (I think).

Rain also known as "Bi" in Korea is definitely a triple threat. He is a superstar in Asia where he is hugely popular as a singer, dancer and actor in movies and dramas. Last summer, Rain debuted in Hollywood with a small supporting role as Taejo Togokahn in The Wachowski Brothers' Speed Racer movie. Although the film was not a big success at the box office, Rain got noticed by big time producer Joel Silver. Now Rain has a leading role in the upcoming badass movie called Ninja Assassin, directed by James McTeigue ("V" for Vendetta). Can't wait to check this out!

GI Joe Trailer

Getting some international buzz from last year's hit Korean spaghetti western "The Good, The Bad, The Weird", actor Lee Byuong-hun will now be seen by all the G.I. Joe fans as Storm Shadow this summer at the movies. Lee has enjoyed the limelight for many years in Asia, especially in Japan where he has received popularity from Korean dramas and movies. I'm a big fan of Lee for his great acting ability, so I wish him a lot of success in his Hollywood debut.

Once a model, Daniel Henney who is half Korean and half American caucasian got his acting start in a hit Korean drama, "My Name is Kim Sam-soon" in 2005. From there, Henney took off in "Hallyuwood" (South Korean film & TV industry) and became a household name in Korea. Playing the baddie, Agent Zero in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Henney began his journey into Hollywood this summer. Henney will hit the small tubes this Fall in CBS, playing a womanizing Korean American doctor in the TV medical drama "Three Rivers." This will be interesting.

The Warrior's Way Promo Trailer

An "A" list actor in Korea, Jang Dong-gun hit big time as lead protagonist in "Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War", which was one of the biggest successes in Korean film history. This Korean War action drama was released in U.S. theaters for a limited time back in 2005 and now readily available in DVD in the States. It's one of the most realistic and compelling war movies I've seen so far. Jang starring along side Kate Bosworth, Geoffrey Rush and Danny Huston will get his Hollywood debut next summer in the action fantasy western called "The Warrior's Way" known prior as "The Laundry Warrior." Check out the rare promo trailer.

Kwon Sang-woo in Once Upon a Time in High School Fight Scene. Rather realistic and intense street fighting than the flawless choreographed fighting in action films. Check it out.

Last, but not least...has anyone heard about the movie remake of The Green Hornet? Yes, it's true...directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and starring Seth Rogen, Nicolas Cage and Cameron Diaz. Who will fill the big shoes of Green Hornet's driver Kato once portrayed by the legend Bruce Lee? How about Korean heartthrob Kwon Sang-Woo (Sourced from The Korea Times)! Popular from Korean movies such as "My Tutor Friend" and TV dramas like "Stairway to Heaven", Kwon has enjoyed stardom for quite some time in Asia. Kwon actually began his movie career in the Korean martial arts film called "Volcano High." From seeing this movie, I'm sure Kwon holds some kind of martial arts belt...most Korean men have taken Tae Kwon Do lessons once in their lives. If not privately, then for sure in the compulsory military service. I have faith that Kwon will be able to pull his role off as Kato, at least for sure physically.

Montreal & Quebec City: Music & Festivities

I've always been curious about Quebec and the region's deeply rooted French culture. After my original plan of revisiting Japan had fallen through, I decided to take a short vacation in Montreal and Quebec City. Since the international jazz festival had kick started in Montreal, I thought this would be a good opportunity to listen to some great music and also capture the festivities with my Canon 5D MII.

The weather was little wet and a lot cooler than what I expected, but the beautiful architecture, fabulous food and friendly people made up for it. I've become very efficient with packing from my travels, but I goofed up on this trip by under packing the warm clothes. Too much summer clothing for an early Spring weather did cause little misery, but luckily I had my hoodie sweater which I ended up wearing nearly everyday.

It was a challenge carrying the camera equipments with me everywhere since it rained almost daily. Oh...and trying to avoid getting engulfed by the attending masses at the jazz festival was little tricky. Although you only see one or several people in some of my pictures, in reality there were crowds of tourists walking about in all directions. I had to stay put in one location for quite a while in few instances, so I could take the right shots. The whole photography experience in Quebec was a blast and I did get few gems out of this trip.

Now can you recognize Johnny Depp (Mad Hatter) under all that make-up? USA Today showed off some never before seen photos from Tim Burton's upcoming film, including three production artworks on their website HERE. According to producer Richard Zanuck, "Alice in Wonderland" has been Burton-ized which is very obvious from looking at the weird and fascinating images. This movie won't be out until May of 2010. Holy cow....that's nearly a year from now!

Being a huge fan of the South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-Wook, I can't wait to finally see "Thirst" when it debuts in the U.S. on July 31st. Park became recognized internationally for his revenge trilogy, but really broke out with my favorite of the three films, "Old Boy." His other not so well known films such as "Joint Security Area" is definitely worth watching.

I had an amazing four days filled with non-stop fun and loads of great memories to last me a life time. My dear friend Tsuneo Sanda and his wife Sachiko-san flew into San Francisco for a visit from Japan and I gave them a very nice tour of the city. Besides going to popular landmarks such as the Coit Tower and dining at North Beach for some Italian, we visited Big Rock Ranch, a residence for Lucas Animation and Lucasfilm's impressive Presidio facility where ILM and Lucasarts is housed. Another dear friend of mine, sculptor Lawrence Noble joined us for the Lucasfilm tour which made it even more fun.

The highlight of the week was celebrating Ralph's 80th birthday at a private gathering. Many old and new friends from Lucasfilm attended the party to wish Ralph a wonderful birthday. I was so busy chatting it up with friends that I didn't have much chance to take pictures, but here are few snap shots taken during the very special day.

James Cameron's not yet released science fiction epic Avatar has been talked about for more than a year now and people have been extremely curious due to the close guarded secrecy of the film. Also, Cameron had been saying all along how ground breaking the visual effects will be with quotes like, "We've eliminated the animation from animation" referring to the CGI effects. All of the hype from lack of information is actually making the geeks more interested in this film.

Couple of Avatar concept artworks showing two different fascinating war machines from the highly anticipated film became officially available yesterday. The Gunship and power suit look awesome, but have you noticed that James Cameron has some type of attraction for these hardwares? There are gun ships in both Terminator and Aliens movies...not to mention the power suit Ripley uses to fight off the queen alien. Anyway, I can't wait to see Avatar later this year!

First Five Minutes of Blood: The Last Vampire...Big Time SPOILER!!

Blood just premiered in Japan, so most likely a flood of images and footage will start bombarding the web. Now if you decide to watch this video, be aware that it's a huge spoiler. Well, I couldn't resist...from seeing the video, I know at least the first five minutes is near faithful to the original anime. Since I'm a huge fan of Blood, I'm very pleased with what I've seen so far. Hopefully the rest of the film will meet my expectations. The lead character Saya is played by Korean actress Jun Ji-Hyun who became popular in Asia for starring in My Sassy Girl.

I first saw this fascinating trailer for District 9 last Friday when I went to catch the disappointing X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The trailer shows paranoid humans trying to understand the motives of these aliens, even questioning one of them...not sure if the interrogator could understand the alien, but I guess we'll soon find out what this is all about. District 9 is directed by first time South African director Neil Blomkamp who originally was attached to direct Halo with Peter Jackson producing. After plans for Halo fell through, Blomkamp and Jackson got together for District 9. Jackson's WETA is doing the special effects, so I'm confident that at least the visuals will look very impressive on the big screen. Looking forward to seeing the film this August.

I hope this note finds you all doing well. I have been having fun and full days, and I wanted to let you know about one really special project I've been working on this year.
Perhaps you recall the play called "Fist of Roses" that we originally presented with Campo Santo at Intersection for the Arts a few years back?

This past semester I have had the honor of working with the amazing playwright Philip Kan Gotanda at UC Berkeley. We have been working to bring the play back to life with a group of wonderful CAL Students, and will be publicly sharing a workshop production of this incredibly complicated and beautiful play next week.

The Clone Wars Concept Artist Russell Chong

Being one of the veteran concept artists with Lucas Animation and even after a big success of The Clone Wars animated series, Russell Chong is still humble and very much down to earth. I've met up with Russell few times and seen his original artworks up close. There is something very special about his work and stylistically, you could see a touch of Ralph McQuarrie in his beautiful creations. Nowadays, concept artists are going completely digital, yet Russell still works with traditional mediums using acrylics and pencil. This I'm sure could be difficult at times especially when there are pressures of deadlines, but Russell is creatively comfortable using traditional methods to get some of his work done. Examples of Russell's concepts realized in The Clone Wars series is the new iconic fully faired Y-Wing Starfighter and the ominous battle cruiser Malevolence, which I have to say are few of my favorites in the show. Along with Russell, there are some incredibly talented artists working very hard at Big Rock to satisfy millions of Star Wars geeks out there and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us in the upcoming season 2 episodes.

Made back in 2007, Big Man Japan was shown last year at Comic-Con and in various film festivals. Directed by Hitoshi Matsumoto in a documentary style, this film follows the main character, the sixth in a long line of Japanese superheroes fighting giant monsters. Although I heard mixed reviews about Big Man Japan, I definitely want to see it.

Artist Bill Selby talks about the Cantina painting:

This poster was commissioned and painted back in 1978 for Factors Etc. Inc., a company that wisely bought merchandising rights for many Star Wars items BEFORE the release of the film.

Freelancing in Ohio at the time, I was hired by Factors to paint the official poster for the very first George Lucas sanctioned Star Wars Fan Club.

The film had been out for over a year when I did the painting, and I was provided with 35mm color slides for reference. The assignment was simple: put all of the aliens that were in the cantina sequence into one grand scene.

The first sketches I did actually contained more creatures but I was told to remove some of them because Lucas didn't care for the original designs.

Once Lucas approved my rough color comp, I began painting. The deadline was tight - just one week - but I opted to do the painting in oils. Not smart. Even though I used heat lamps to speed drying time, I wound up finishing the painting in acrylic. Live and learn.

The original was 2 1/2' X 3 1/2' and painted on gessoed masonite.
When I finished the painting I crated it up - a flat plywood crate around 4 inches thick - and headed to Los Angeles to get it approved.

It was the dead of winter, and I had to change planes in Chicago. While standing inside the airport watching bag handlers remove luggage and the crated painting from the plane, I looked on in horror as it dropped off the baggage trailer and onto the icy tarmac. Nobody noticed but me!

As tow tractors and trucks whizzed within inches of the crate, I frantically notified security. The crated painting was rescued by a mechanic taking a cigarette break.

In Hollywood, I delivered the painting to an office trailer on the Universal back lot. A kewl logo on the trailer's side said "Black Falcon Ltd." (this is what Lucas was calling his company then).

I waited inside the 'living room' area of the trailer while a secretary took my painting to Lucas for approval. She emerged with the painting in less than one minute. "It's approved," she said.

The coolest thing I got to do at this year's WonderCon was having super star comic artist Jim Lee pose in front of my camera. After Jim finished sketching and signing for his huge crowd of eager fans at his booth, we slipped away behind the curtained partitions where all the equipments and supplies were stored. We made the best of the environment and began our photo shoot. The stacked tables, ladders and large aluminum canisters were actually perfect for that urban industrial look. Mike Mignola's Hellboy for Obama Art

My proud acquisition at WonderCon is Mike Mignola’s drawing of Hellboy wearing an Obama shirt. This totally cool piece was originally auctioned off last October by Comic Industry for Obama to raise donation funds for the Obama campaign. All of the proceeds from the fundraiser auction were given to Obama for America as well as Rock the Vote. Hellboy creator & artist Mike Mignola openly took a political stance with this drawing, a bold move since Mignola used his popular comic book character to support a political figure. It’s definitely a one-of-a-kind piece that is tied in with the historical presidential campaign and now the historical American presidency.

WonderCon is now over and we geeks must get back to our normal lives reading comic books and playing with action figures. Although I was with the Dreams & Visions Press this year at WonderCon, I ran around the floor like a madman most of the time and didn’t do much good at the booth. I think I spent more time with Wildstorm’s Eddy Choi at artist Jim Lee’s booth than Dreams & Visions…sorry Stanley! Trying not to make any excuses here, but it’s not often I get to see friends at these comic-cons. On top of that, I was working hard to get artist commissions and looking for additions to my collection. I did manage to take several photos at the event including some great shots taken from a private session with Jim Lee, which will be posted in my photography blog, “Light Conversationalist” in the coming days. WonderCon this year seemed little smaller than last year, but it was jam packed with people on Saturday. I think the panels for the upcoming blockbusters Watchmen and Star Trek were drawing the huge crowds. Overall, I had a great time at WonderCon this year and already look forward to the next one. Here's the funny story behind these pictures. Eddy Choi who managed Jim Lee's booth at the artist alley was getting constantly approached by attendees who were mistaking him as Jim Lee. There were many occasions when enamored fans would just come up and take snap shots of Eddy, completely believing he is Jim. Some people actually wanted signatures and one fan even asked, "What's it like working with Frank Miller?" Eddy answered, "Awesome" and the oblivious fan walked off happy. I have to admit, it got pretty funny at times. Eddy laughs it off like a good sport and says, "I get this all the time." After seeing many of these repeated moments of mistaken identity, Jon Bolerjack who also works for Wildstorm made the sign in the photos for Eddy. Well, this wonderful idea backfired, because the crowd thought it was very amusing and would ask Eddy to hold up the sign for snapshots like the ones I took. Few even asked me to pose with Eddy holding the sign...not so funny after that.

Setting Up for WonderCon 2009

I spent few hours helping Stan Stice of Dreams & Visions Press set up his booth at the Moscone Center yesterday for WonderCon. Just looking around the huge hall, I can see that it's going to be a great event. Attending WonderCon is a must for a geek like me and I can't wait until I'm back on the convention floor later today. If you're going to this geekfest, stop by Dreams & Visions Press at booth #1136 and say hello. There will be lots of goodies there including the prototype Ralph MCQuarrie Darth Vader concept helmet being produced by eFX Collectibles. I really gotta go to bed now, so I'll catch you later!

"Light Conversationalist" My New Blog Devoted to Photography

Just little over a year ago, I started this blog with an intention of staying connected with my family and friends. As time went on, the blog slowly evolved into an outlet for sharing my geeky interests with the visitors. If I've known blogging was this much fun, I would've started years ago...better late than never. Well, I've become very passionate about photography and also getting pretty serious about continually learning this creative and fun medium. So...I decided recently to start another blog called, "Light Conversationalist" which devotes entirely to photography and my own personal work. I want to engage the viewers with my images, not so much with words or sound like this blog. So from this point on, I'll be posting all of my photography work on the new blog site. There's not much in the new site right now, but I'll slowly work on it as I find some free time. Morbhead will continue to serve as my primary blog site and I'll post regularly as I've been doing in the last year. Thanks for visiting! Ciao!

"Wrong" Live at Echo Awards in Berlin

I got hooked on Depeche Mode in the 80's like I got hooked on Star Wars and they still sound dope! Their first single, "Wrong" from the upcoming 12th studio album called, "Sounds of the Universe" will be released on April 21st. I'm definitely getting my CD on the first day. This also means, probably another world concert tour...I'm there! My first Depeche Mode concert was in 1988 for their "Music for the Masses" tour and I'm proud to say that I've been to every single of their tours since then. I'd better get my black leather jacket out of the closet and dust it off :-)

I don't get too many chances to attend the various comic-cons held throughout the year, so I get pretty excited when WonderCon returns to San Francisco once a year in February. Last year's WonderCon was a blast! I bumped into many familiar faces and also made new friends during the three day event. The highlight of last year's WonderCon was getting together with artist Jim Lee and his Wildstorm crew for a Korean BBQ in the city. It will be great to see friends again and check out some cool comic artworks. There will be tons of comic books, toys and art! Catch you at WonderCon!

One of the things I look forward to when I’m in Tokyo is to visit Tsuneo-san, his wife Sachiko-san and sons Kensaku-san and Sohei-san. This time at our dinner together, I reunited with Stuart Wilkshire and his lovely wife Michiko-san who are members of the 501st “Terror” Australian Garrison. They helped Lawrence Noble and I at Celebration Japan last year by organizing a show of force...I mean, support during the Lucasfilm’s Luke bust giveaway by rallying Darth Vader, C-3PO and bunch of stormtroopers for the exciting event. We had a wonderful time catching up over some incredible Japanese food. It’s fun to be around people who are so passionate about Star Wars! Arigato gozaimas Tsuneo-san for the delicious dinner.
